ESTM 101  An Introduction to Construction Estimating

Who should attend?

If you are new to the industry or to estimating, if you currently work in the field and are considering a move into the office, if you are a college or university graduate still considering your career options or if you are an employer wishing to educate your existing staff, this course will provide participants with a comprehensive overview of the exciting career that is Construction Estimating.

  • How project phases influence an estimator’s responsibilities
  • Types of construction contracts and the type of estimates they require
  • How construction documents and estimates are organized

  • The responsibilities of a quantity surveyor
  • The estimate as a risk analysis and management tool
  •  How jobs are priced and how estimates are summarized
  •  How procurement methods effect the estimating process
  •  Laws and rules which inform the tendering process
  •  How to deal with allowances and contingencies
  •  The basics of bonding in construction
LearningOutcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be ableto:

  1. Identify the various phases of a construction project from inception to commissioning and beyond.
  2. Describe the role of the estimator in the modern construction industry.
  3. Identify 6 common types of construction contract arrangements.
  4. Identify 4 common types of construction estimates.
  5. Detail the components of a construction estimate.
  6. Recall the process of creating and applying various unit rates within a construction estimate as well as the completion and summarization of a construction estimate
  7. Identify various methods used for procurement of construction services.
Course agenda:

On line discussions using a slide presentation will provide the basis of the course. Participants will be provided with end of unit quiz questions to test their knowledge. Practical exercises will include on-line research and mathematical problems related to calculation of unit rates for estimating purposes. Examples of contract documents, an estimate spreadsheet template and copies of pertinent slides will be provided.

Day two – Types of contracts, estimating basics and organization

Day three  Estimating methodologies and processes

Day four  Procurement basics and estimating technologies
